A walk on the Ile aux Cygnes
From the Pont de Grenelle to the iconic Pont de Bir-Hakeim, you can explore this long, pedestrianised island in the Seine and enjoy its spectacular views of the Eiffel Tower and the Maison de la Radio, among other landmarks. At the foot of the Pont de Grenelle, you’ll come across the replica of the Statue of Liberty. Given to the city by the Committee of Americans in Paris to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution, it was cast from a plaster model made by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the designer of the full-scale original. Of more modest dimensions, it nevertheless possesses the same emotional force.
Turning to New York
This replica was inaugurated in 1889, three years after its American sister, in the presence of its creator, whose workshops were nearby. Against Bartholdi's will, the statue was turned towards the east because, according to the French President, it must not have its back to the Elysée or be inaugurated from a boat. The sculptor finally won the argument, and the statue was turned towards the west and New York in 1937.
